Our Generation Documentary Film

Our Generation is an incredible documentary film that touches on many of the discourse covered in the second half of this course such as colonialism, post colonialism, indigeneity, postcolonial amnesia and postcolonial stress disorder.

It focuses on the Aboriginal people of the Northern Territory who are documented over the course of three years as they fought for their land, their culture and respect and freedom during Northern Territory Intervention (The Northern Territory National Emergency Response) by the Australian government.

What’s so great about this documentary film is that it is an independent film, where the Aboriginal communities who were involved in its making were consulted throughout the process of its creation.

I highly recommend this film, especially to those of you who would like to further familiarise yourselves with the history of Aboriginal Australians. You can watch it in full on YouTube.

  1. I think it's great how there are forms of media out there that show other perspectives on historical events and also society in general. i do though think that its quite saddening that most sources are from independent artists or directors. There's a larger question to ask - Why isn't documentaries like this more well known or funded by bigger media companies? Is there less demand and attraction in these? If so why?

  2. Yes, this is an awesome example of fourth cinema - in giving the Aboriginal group a voice which combats that of the dominant European voice. I think the whole idea of making a film as a community also brings about more power to the Indigenous perspective as rather than one director telling the story, a variety of stories can be told and the marginalised become empowered as a result.

  3. Thanks for posting this, I found it very interesting. I agree, this documentary is perfect in regards to what this course is about, and sharing these types of documentaries, not just amongst this blog, but to a wider audience of friends and family is a step towards more documentaries like this being made.
