What is rape if you aren’t punished, is it just sex?

What is rape if you aren’t punished, is it just sex?

The story which we have heard in the last few days is one of the worst examples of a bias justice system which is in place to protect the chosen few. Out of respect I don’t wish to talk about the incident. But wish to talk about the issue of this young athlete’s punishment. Paired with the very shocking letter from the rapist’s father which impressed me with its ability to offend the victim further.

To think in modern day and age, where we have global journalism and 24-hour media news content, a judge has the lack of foresight to understand that giving a white middle class American male a grossly short sentence. Could you imagine such a short sentence for a young African American male?  With a quick google of this issue you will find one of the most of the most disturbing facts of this case. When describing the young male instead of referring to him as you would expect “said rapist” we are told the young man is a three time all American swimmer, as if this will dismiss the fact that her raped a young woman. This is a recurring theme throughout the media coverage, even in own New Zealand Herald didn’t even make the effort to change the title after copying the news piece.

In a letter released by the rapist father we can see a reoccurring theme of white privilege. His father believing that his son’s actions didn’t last long enough to warrant a longer sentence? (Bizarre). But why would Jeff Rosen think that this, an unforgivable action did not even warrant more than one year’s jail time. Perhaps the rapist was given a short sentence because his future was ‘brighter’ or maybe it was a result of the fact that he was a white swimming star. Never the less it was decided that this wasn’t a large enough crime to have your life ruined. But what is the point I couldn’t image that even if he able to finish his studies who will want him. We in New Zealand are almost constantly confronted with stories of the United States ridiculous institutional racism. So why are his comments so hurtful to many people, he is simply stating a fact. If you’re a white middleclass male, the rules do not apply to you they are there to help you not to punish you. You’re an American, your ‘freedom’ has been afforded to you. With these constantly racially challenged issues becoming more easily accessible to larger numbers of people than would have previously been reached, which is only made more apparent by a more liberal global media.

Not all may know but the issue of sexual assault is so often an event that occurs in universities and sports in the United States. But apparently if your valuable to society, then it doesn’t matter. But when we so often see an economic gap being paired with racism. So are all men created equally or are some still less equal than others. It also doesn’t take you long to figure out that if you’re a sports person then your put on a pedestal. Mike Tyson, Josh McNary, Kobe Bryant. It doesn’t take a trained eye or someone who hasn’t taken FTVMS 210 to see that if you’re rich and African American then you pay, but if you middle class white you don’t.

With the knowledge that smoking kills. The idea of banning smoking rather than another tax raise has come to the forefront yet again. Many have called this a racial issue, and that Māori are being a
