Media and its Cultural Appropriation


In the media, cultural appropriation is just another way for earning money. It is often used in adverts as well as on products that are made in different countries. Using cultural themes in other countries advertisement, such as another culture's symbols, language and traditions, makes for an interesting and “original” advert. A good example of cultural appropriation of New Zealand, is the traditional Haka dance in Italian Fiat advert (https://youtu.be/0RK5qfIePGM). People perform their own adaptation of ‘Haka’ dance. The advert shows New Zealand tradition in a, way I would see as a ‘comedic’, therefore not respectful. Most adverts will not pay respect, advertisers are made to hook the audience with a ‘wow’ factor, something unique and funny.. Borrowing traditions of another culture can easily become problematic. Maori people might be unhappy with the way other countries represent their traditions in the media. But looking at this from the other side, cultural appropriation can be a good way to share and recognise other cultures. Cultural appropriation can be positive if it is done right, and represents the culture in its true form.
