False Equivalencies

I’m not going to lie, I have stolen this link off of another post. But I couldn't help myself, I think this clip makes an amazing point and I need to talk about it.

False equivalencies are a fundamental part of new racism that need to be addressed. The idea that for every movement, protest, hashtag, award category or comment there needs to be a white equivalent is ludicrous. Pretty much the entire existence of the western world is the equivalent, with nearly all institutions, media outlets, stereotype, society and culture benefiting white privilege. So how is it possible that there are still people ignorant enough to feel that there needs to be a ‘white lives matter’ to make things fair? The lack of self awareness is a marco-level issue that needs to be addressed through a transformation of the social attitude of dominant vs minority and white privilege. The exnomiation of white privilege is one of the biggest faults in modern society, and until it’s addresses new racism will continue to be as much of an issue as overt racism.

  1. Totally agree! I watched the video and found myself pulling the same faces the presenter was after completely dismissing tweets that have "false equivalencies" written all over them. One part that stuck was when an ignorant tweet about white people should start a movement for their race, um? If they haven't noticed already there isn't necessarily anywhere for them to move to as it is westernised societies that are the dominant group that have marginalised races that actually take movements seriously. Back to your blog though, good read.
