"Stop saying this shit to Asian people"

Society today on a global scale is multicultural, with the mixture and diversity of ethnic groups being present throughout. Due to this diversity, to blankly categorize and strictly contain ethnic groups is pure ignorant, and often offensive; most commonly seen through stereotypes or cultural appropriation. This type of offensive stereotyping and containment of ethnicities is prominent in Western society, and more importantly in the Eurocentric model of society; where ideology around the "other/otherness" is a severe social flaw. This clip is casting a harsh, mocking light on this issues, showing the Eurocentric ignorance towards Asians. These Asian representatives within the clip reveal how culturally insensitive it is to be collectively grouped together as "one" ethnic group, with a strong sense of cultural flattening, disregarding the diversity throughout the continent of Asia. Using Middle Eastern, Indian, Phillipinos and Chinese representatives, the intended message is loud, and not to mention embarrassingly clear for the Eurocentric society to comprehend.

"Stop saying this shit to Asian people" use the range of Asian representatives to share questions or comments that they repetitively come across based entirely on the way they look and their experience with cultural flattening. Question/comments such as:

1. "No, but like, where are you really from?" (Suggesting not a part of the majority, forcing otherness upon them)

2. "Your English is really good" - (to an American Chinese born and raised in America)

3. "Are you really Asian though?"- (to a women from Pakistan)

I believe the Asian stereotype is the most stereotyped ethnic group, due to media and the film industry reinforcing a shallow representation. The Dragon Lady, The Gook, The Martial Artist to name a few, are the visual representation that are associated with 'being Asian'. All of these saturated representations are completely silencing, and absenting a range of cultures, ethnicities and countries throughout the vast continent. East Asian is the most prominent representation throughout Eurocentric societies, which as result leaves an enormous amount of Asians to be misrepresented  or stereotyped with the burden of representation.

The clip was short and direct, as well as casting a soft comical light on the harsh topic of racism. It also reinforces a sense of awareness, and alertness into casual racism seen throughout society on a day-to-day basis.. once again leaving the westernised, installed Eurocentric-minded viewer in yet another cringe-worthy and embarrassing state of obnoxiousness.

  1. tI love these kinds of videos! They really put into perspective how naive and ignorant a lot of people are towards 'others' and their ethnicities. Would you feel that this type of video would be relevant to Asian people in New Zealand? Would it differ in any way from this American version? Very valid points though, 100% agree with you.

  3. This is something that's been on my mind for a while as well. It's so annoying how there is this eurocentric definition of what "Asian" is. It has a lot to do with how Asian's are portrayed in the media, like you said the Gook, martial artist and so forth. I'm part Filipino, and since the Philippines is part of Asian, that makes me part Asian. But when I tell people I'm part Asian, I've been met with comments like "Oh, well that's not really Asia though is it...". Um, YES it is. Very relevant post!
